About Us
01 January 2012
Bedfordview Baby and Toddler Centre

Our Goal
Our goal is to create an environment of excellence, to be aware of international trends and to give each child the very best opportunity possible in order to develop fully in all areas. Our sole objective is to provide a comprehensive pre-school education for our children in a close knit and caring environment. We are flexible and are happy to consider the introduction of whatever services the parents require.

Operating Philosophy
Our objective is to be a multi-cultural, co-educational school. All children have special abilities and the school has a responsibility to nurture these. This will be attained through a diverse curriculum that allows for an enlightened and stimulating academic environment where teachers are encouraged to teach creatively so that learners can develop thinking and problem solving abilities while fostering independence and creativity
The young learner is given the opportunity of discovering the qualities and uses of materials by experimenting and exploring. The joy lies in doing rather than in the end result. We see your child as a unique individual and will guide him or her to develop in all areas to their full potential.
We are located near Eastgate and within easy reach of
Linksfield, Edenvale, Morninghill, KemptonPark,Kensington and Germiston.
Bedfordview Baby and Toddler Centre is a bilingual
school with 110 children between the ages of
birth and 5 years.
We cater for both mornings only and full day children
and our hours are 6:30 - 13:00 and 6:30 - 17:30
respectively.

The Curriculum
We follow the Day-by-Day Early Childhood Development School Readiness Program.
We focus on enriched curriculum, with horizontal enrichment whereby the content is applied to real life situations and vertical enrichment, which implies the in-depth exploration of content in all areas.
It is a distinct stage, important both in it's own right and in preparing children for later schooling. Young children learn best through 'playing' and 'doing' and the Foundation Stage offers a broad and purposeful curriculum that is delivered through planned and supported play activities to help ensure all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential and experience the best possible start to their education.
Learning areas
There are eleven Learning Areas:
Numeracy,
Literacy,
Life Skills,
Directionality,
Spatial Perception,
Visual Perception,
Observation,
Seriation,
Reasoning,
Find and Gross motor.
The teaching staff help them match the level of the work to the learner’s needs carries out continuous assessment. This implies that the programs have to be flexible and dynamic to meet every learner’s needs and learning styles.
Learners are observed on a continuous basis. An intensive Individual Evaluation is done with each child at the end of each term. These evaluations are kept in class and can be made available to parents at any time. These
assessments are done according to Occupational Therapy standards. A mid-year and year-end assessment is prepared for parents.
The following tests are done annual at an additional charge.
Hearing tests are performed annually by Tammy Hennen Audiologists.
Speech screening assessment tests are performed annually by Kim Abrahams a registered Speech Therapists.
Vision Centre performs visual Screening tests annually. Children often cannot tell you when they are having problems with their vision. Visual screening helps to identify those children who may need further eye examinations and testing. The earlier the detection of vision problems, the more successful the treatment.

Different Classes
A very unique aspect of our school is that we move our children up to a higher class according to their development and ability and not necessarily according to age.
Our classrooms are all spacious and each class has a dedicated area for reading and quiet time, fantasy play and perceptual or creative activities.
Our baby class is bright and airy. Our cots are all made from beech wood with storage drawers under each cot for each baby's belongings.
Each baby has a daily chart, which is available to parents each day so that they are able to see whether their child ate, how

many wet and soiled nappies the baby had.

Events
During the year we host a variety of fun days.
Monthly Puppet show or special day for the children
Annual Sports day
Mother's /Father's Day Tea Party
Grand Parents Tea Party
Annual Concert
Annual Fund Raising Event
Extramural's
We offer a variety of extra murals such as karate, pottery, dancing, music, gymnastics and playball.

Bakers Man
We have a Bakers Man chosen every Friday. Each child gets a turn to be Bakers man. This is an opportunity for mommy and the little one to create something nice to eat at home. It's then brought to school on the Friday.
Play areas
Our outside play areas are large and very well equipped. The separate toddler play area has soft padded matting and relevant age related play equipment. We also have a bicycle track, wooden jungle gym, a shaded sandpit and lots of grass. The play times are staggered so that children are able to use all the equipment freely.

Discipline
Our objective is having a happy and peaceful atmosphere where there is human understanding and caring. When correction is required we have two approaches:
Time out - A few minutes to sit in a special place away from the group but in view of the teacher, where the child can think about what he or she has done.
Persuasion - The child is gently led to exercise self-discipline and behave in an acceptable manner. This can be done through a quiet chat or a stern talking to. No child should be permitted to harm another or him or herself or damage property.
Communication with parents
Some of the teachers prefer to use little communication books and notes are then written in them accordingly.
We also hand out Communication forms with regards to misbehaviour at school to keep parents informed with regards to a child behaviour at all times.
Incident report forms are also send home to report an incident to parents. Where ever possible photos are attached. Copies of the above are then kept in the child's personal file.
Complaints and Compliments
It is required that any complaints or complements are submitted in writing.
Security
We subscribe to Top Security. The following is also implemented to keep our children safe. Electrical Fencing surrounds our property. Keypad Access to school.
